What is Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)?

By Dr. James Tumlin

GFR is short for glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The GFR is a reflection of how well your kidneys are functioning. For patients with a high GFR, it represents better kidney function.  Conversely, a patient with a low GFR has worse kidney function. It is important for every patient with CKD to know the value of their GFR. By tracking the GFR along with your doctor, it will enable you to see the positive benefits of controlling blood pressure, diabetes and other variables that affect GFR.
